Buyer's Guide

How to Spot Fake Supplement Reviews

Fake and incentivized reviews are a widely documented problem across e-commerce generally, and the supplement category is no exception. Here's what we look for when assessing whether a product's review base looks genuine โ€” and what we found checking Hormovance's.

Red Flags in Review Sections

Suspiciously Uniform 5-Star Clustering

Genuine review distributions for almost any product usually include some 3- and 4-star reviews mixed in โ€” a handful of neutral or mixed experiences is normal, even for good products. A review section that's nearly 100% five stars with no mixed feedback is worth treating with skepticism.

Identical Phrasing Across "Different" Reviewers

Fabricated review sets sometimes reuse near-identical sentence structures or phrases across supposedly different customers โ€” a pattern that's much easier to spot once you're looking for it.

Overly Specific, Overly Perfect Narratives

Reviews that read like ad copy โ€” hitting every marketing talking point in a tidy narrative arc โ€” are more likely written or heavily edited by the seller than organically submitted by a customer.

No Verified Purchase Indicators

Reviews with no purchase verification are easier to fabricate than reviews tied to confirmed transactions. Verified-purchase badges aren't foolproof, but their presence is a meaningfully better signal than their absence.

What We Checked on Hormovance

The reviews we assessed included verified-purchase indicators, showed varied phrasing and experience timelines rather than identical scripts, and included some mixed or lukewarm feedback alongside positive reviews (see our complaints breakdown) โ€” a pattern more consistent with a genuine review base than a fabricated one.

A Caveat Worth Stating

We can't independently verify every individual review's authenticity โ€” no outside reviewer can, without direct platform access. What we can do is check for the patterns that typically indicate fabrication, and those patterns weren't dominant in what we assessed.

The Bottom Line

No review-pattern check is a perfect substitute for regulatory oversight of review authenticity, which is limited in this industry. But checking for these specific patterns โ€” star distribution, phrasing variety, verification badges, mixed feedback โ€” gives you a meaningfully better read than taking a 5-star average at face value.
